Five Special Ways to Celebrate Baby’s First Holiday Season
Friday, December 4th, 2009
Your new baby has already brought you more joy and excitement than you ever thought possible. Every moment is precious and you don’t want to miss a single one of them. As the holiday season gears up, you’ll want to take time to create some new traditions and make special memories to last your lifetime- and theirs.
- Start an ornament collection for the new baby. You can have an ornament personalized with a picture of your little one and the year to capture the moment. Then each year, have another one made and when your son or daughter is old enough to move out into their own home, pack the ornaments up and they have a starter set for their own tree. Another ornament idea many parents indulge in is purchasing the annual ornament produced by Hallmark or another brand and creating that collection for the baby.
- Create a photo greeting card with the baby’s picture (or the whole family) and send it out to all your friends and relatives (especially those who haven’t seen the baby yet.) This is another seasonal tradition you can do every year. Don’t forget to save one for your own scrapbook! Along with the baby’s birthday, the holiday season is a perfect time to commemorate the passage of time.
- Start a charm bracelet for Mom to be handed down to baby when she has their first child. Add a charm for each year, one that represents some significant event of that particular year. When your child has her own first baby, you can pass the bracelet on to her. If your child is a boy, the gift could be given to the first grandchild’s mother.
- Write a letter to your child and save it for when he is older. Your child will cherish the recollections of how deep your feelings were this very first holiday season. Pour out your heart with the hopes and dreams you have for your child and the two of you will watch them come true over the years.
- Start a family tradition for the holidays. Bundle everyone up and go out to look at all the decorative lights. After you get home, read “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” or another holiday classic or watch your favorite holiday movie together. Whether a movie or a film, choose a classic favorite and watch the same one each year on the night you go out to admire the lights. This kind of tradition creates memories that will never be forgotten by you or your child.
Now that you’ve begun building your family, the holidays will become even more special than ever before. As you incorporate old family traditions from both sides of the family and add your own in the mix, your family will bond together with the shared love and laughter of this joyous time of year.
